Ella - you can map the physical footpath itself without any worries - you're there, it exists. If you want to note whether it's a bridleway or a public footpath, you need some other non-copyrighted evidence i.e. usually a photo of a signpost.

(Oh, and it's a small world for IC Chemistry '99 types...)

David, yes, I can imagine that any delay between data submission and presentation is going to immediately put off a whole segment of people: those who want immediate gratification. Wikipedia, despite it's awkward non-WYSIWYG editing, still reflects changes immediately.

We're lucky that Soton is one of the areas that OSM has reasonable coverage of. I'm (slowly) trying to extend things out in the Chandler's Ford direction. The frustrating part is the time it takes before data you submit gets rendered in to tiles for the default Mapnik base layer.

Hmm, cunning thought. I suspect not though - after all, you're using a tool to generate new copyrightable material, not just copying the material. Similar to using Windows to write Linux, for example. Of course, I am not a lawyer.

If you persuaded a walker with a gps to wonder along a marked footpath with their ordinance survey map (needed to find footpaths in my experience) to plot an online map, would that be breaching ordinance survey's copyright on the map?

Sounds good. Probably won't be any time soon, but I'll take a look into it in March. Thanks for the invite.

Why don't you come along to one of our mapping parties and see how it's done? :-)
